Первые сведения об Э. относятся к 6 в. Вероятно, в 12 в. получил городские права. В середине 15 в. стал столицей Шотландии. В 13-17 вв. город неоднократно занимали английские войска, подвергавшие его значительным разрушениям. В 17-18 вв. в связи с присоединением Шотландии к Англии значение Э. как политического и административного центра упало. В ходе промышленного переворота (с середины 18 в.) выросла торгово-промышленная и финансовая роль Э. В 30-х гг. 19 в. в Э. возник совет тред-юнионов, получило развитие чартистское движение.

Э. - один из живописнейших европейских городов ("Северные Афины"). Расположен на холмах; на узких крутых улочках много башнеобразных (до 12 этажей) домов из грубого камня; новая часть имеет регулярную планировку (проект 1767-68, арх. Дж. Крэг и др.) с ансамблевой застройкой в духе классицизма. Среди памятников архитектуры - бывший королев. замок (11-16 вв.), дворец шотландских королей (Холируд; осн. в 1128), жилые дома 16 в., классицистические здания и комплексы (пл. Шарлотты, 1792-1807, арх. Р. Адам; и др.), неоготические постройки, аэровокзал Тёрнхаус (1955, арх. Р. Мэтью). Королевский шотландский музей, Национальный музей древностей Шотландии, Национальная галерея Шотландии.

Edinburgh rock

Edinburgh rock or Edinburgh Castle rock is a traditional Scottish confection, and is quite distinct from conventional rock. It consists of sugar, water, cream of tartar, colourings and flavourings. It is formed into sticks, and has a soft and crumbly texture.
